SYNOPSIS
Twins Viola and Sebastian are shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria. Separated in the storm, Viola makes it to shore while Sebastian is picked up by a passing ship, neither knowing the fate of the other. =
Being a woman in a strange land, Viola masquerades as a man and gains favour with Illyria’s leading nobleman, the Duke Orsino. The Duke is in love with a noblewoman, the Lady Olivia, who has recently lost her brother and does not return the Duke’s advances. When the Duke sends Viola (in her guise as a man) to the Lady Olivia to petition for her love on his behalf, the Lady instead falls instantly in love with Viola. The tale becomes even more twisted when Viola reveals to the audience that she has fallen in love with the Duke. =
To add to the love triangle, Olivia’s hand is sought by two other suitors, the foppish knight Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and Malvolio, the boorish head servant of Olivia’a household. =
And what of Sebastian? His imminent arrival in Illyria is set to confuse the situation even further.
Add Olivia’s perpetually drunken uncle, Sir Toby Belch, the household clown Feste, and Olivia’s sharp tongued handmaiden Maria to divert love from it’s true course and we have the classic Shakespearean comedy of love gone wrong. =
